US trip by leader of 'bankrupt' Birmingham sparks backlash

September 8, 2023 by Jonathan Hemus

It is more than a little ironic that I kicked off our #InsigniaCrisis conference by recounting why British Midland CEO Michael Bishop was my inspiration to embark on a career in crisis management.

When a British Midland plane crashed near East Midlands Airport in 1989, he made the decision to immediately travel to the scene of the crash to demonstrate empathy, responsibility and accountability.

Today, I was interviewed by the BBC about Birmingham City Council’s crisis management response to its financial problems.

Recovering from such a huge crisis is a major challenge. It must start with strong, visible leadership, courageous actions and clear, honest and empathetic communication with the people of Birmingham, and the Council’s employees who will be fearful of what the future may hold.

Taking a leaf out of Sir Michael’s book in other words.
